Pre/Re-Marital Evaluations and Counseling
Successful couples are those who know how to discuss their differences in ways that actually strengthen and improve their relationship. They know that love alone is not enough; they must also have the skills that are part of healthy relationships.
In addition to skills, we also have to learn to welcome and embrace change. When we marry we promise to stay together till death us do part– but, we don't promise to stay the same!?That would be -boring!. We need skills and confidence to embrace, integrate, and negotiate change.
The good news is that the skills or behaviors – behaviors for handling disagreement and conflict, for integrating change, and for expressing love, intimacy, sex, support, and appreciation – can all be learned. Keeping an open mind and heart, couples can unlearn the behaviors that predict divorce –that destroy love – and replace them with behaviors that keep love alive.
Couples, who are married, contemplating marriage or in committed relationships will benefit by investing in a relationship evaluation. This comprehensive researched-based questionnaire is about the four major predictors of marital stability: family background, personality, values and couple conflict resolution. The results will identify your strengths as well as areas of self-improvement.
Individuals, who are not currently in a committed relationship can also benefit by identifying potential “troubled spots” that may arise in future relationships. The results will help you identify whether you are ready to be in a committed relationship and what areas you can personally work on to increase your chances for success in future relationships.
Following the evaluation(s), it would be helpful to spend a few sessions with a counselor to discuss the results and to implement a plan to focus on existing strengths and to add new skills-thus laying the ground work for a successful marriage/relationship.
